Automotive Contest Revs Up at South May 8

High school students from automotive technology classes in Texas and Oklahoma are revving up their auto engine skills in preparation for the “Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge” Division 4 Finals on South Campus May 8. The teen teams will take apart and reassemble a small block Chevy engine during a timed competition for judges who will assess their technique and understanding of torque specifications. Spectators are welcome. The competition begins at   10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Painless Performance  Products is hosting the contest and free inspections that will be given by the National Street Rod Association from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for NSRA vehicles made in 1980 or before, says South Automotive Chair Steve Elms. TR Campus to Dedicate New Math & Science Wing

Trinity River Campus will celebrate the opening of their new 71,917-square-foot math and science wing during a dedication ceremony this Friday, April 30, from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend the event, beginning with music and refreshments, followed by a 12:15 p.m. welcome from Campus President Tahita Fulkerson, remarks by Chancellor Erma Johnson Hadley and a ribbon cutting by students. Group tours will begin at 1 p.m. The wing features 10 science labs to be used for biology, chemistry and geology courses and 13 classrooms, including five tiered lecture halls, one regular lecture hall, five general classrooms, and two computer classrooms. Hiring Seminar May 4

A seminar for administrators and support staff involved in hiring TCC faculty and staff will be held Tuesday, May 4, at Northwest Campus. The seminar is from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Michael Saenz Conference Center, WACB 1123. The four-hour seminar, offered through TCC Institute, consists of two sections. The first part covers the practices, policies and procedures of the hiring process. Actions using TCC’s Colleague software to employ faculty and staff will be explained in the second section. Topics to be covered include “My To Do List,” terminating employment, ending and adding positions, hiring regular and temporary employees, and employee position changes. Projection Magazine Arriving This Week

TCC and Tarrant County community members will receive the latest issue of the College’s official magazine, Projection, in the mail this week. And for the first time ever, the magazine is available electronically on TCC’s website. The Spring 2010 issue highlights the people and efforts of TCC’s transitional programs and is packed with other TCC news, including a special Q&A with Erma Johnson Hadley, an introduction to new executive leaders and updates from the TCC Foundation. Campus Visits by Chancellor Start Monday

Got ideas about TCC’s future? Next week is your chance to share them in person with Chancellor Erma Johnson Hadley. She will visit with faculty and staff on all five campuses to gather input. Three campus visits are Monday and one each will be on Tuesday and Friday. The first session begins at 8 a.m. Monday at South Campus, ending with the 9:30 a.m. Friday stop at Northwest Campus. Tune In to See TCC on Univision Tonight

Faculty and staff Spanish-speakers will represent TCC tonight on Univision’s 23 A su lado (on your side) program. The televised phone bank will be promoted on-air from 5 to 7 p.m. and allow community members to call in with TCC-related questions. Among the topics to be promoted are summer courses and programs, adjunct teaching opportunities, admissions, financial aid, English classes and more. This will be the College’s third time to participate in the program. During the past two times, TCC has helped more than 200 individuals find out more about opportunities through higher education and TCC. District Speech Entry Deadline Approaching

The deadline to enter the District Speech Competition is Tuesday, April 27. TCC students currently enrolled in SPCH 1311 or 1315 are eligible to compete. To register, students must sign up with their speech instructor. Participants will present the same speech in two preliminary rounds to a panel of two to three judges. Preliminary rounds, beginning at 1:30 p.m., will be narrowed to a final round of six students. The District Speech Competition is Friday, April 30, at Northwest Campus in the Student Center, WSTU, 1305. The final round is at 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Math Competition Winners Receive Scholarships

Congratulations to TCC students who received a total of more than $100,000 in scholarships to four-year universities thanks to this year’s Jim Bolen Math Competition. Samantha Crowell, a Northwest Campus student, received a full two-year scholarship to TCU based on her exam scores, overall academic achievements and other factors. Hung Doan, also a student at NW Campus who placed second in the TCC District Competition, was awarded a TCU Dean’s Scholarship valued at $39,000. Students Matthew McClure, NW Campus; Amy Carlin, South; and Asal Nabili, Northeast, each received $10,000 scholarships to Baylor. Pennie Boyett Earns Scholarship

Congratulations to TCC’s Southeast English instructor Pennie Boyett for receiving the $1,500 Scott Scribes Scholarship for Older Adults. Awarded by the Writers’ League of Texas, the scholarship targets mature adults making a career in the writing field. Boyett, a 20-year veteran of the newspaper business, started at TCC as an adjunct professor in 2007, becoming a full-time instructor in 2007. Her experience in daily journalism includes writing and editing positions with the Alliance Regional Newspapers, The Dallas Morning News and The Arlington Morning News. A student at the University of North Texas, Boyett is pursuing a graduate certificate in narrative journalism. Her goal is to teach journalism at TCC. SE Hosts Service Academies Forum Saturday

Southeast Campus will host the North Texas U.S. Service Academies Forum Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the North Ballroom. Participants will include representatives from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, U.S. Coast Guide Academy in New London, Conn., U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. and U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The forum is free and open to the public.
