Women Focus of Month-long Activities

TCC will continue its Women’s History month celebrations Monday with a lecture by South Government and Humanities Professor Carlos Antonio Rovelo on “The Rear View Mirror: Women Defining Themselves.” Sponsored by the Social Sciences Department, the lecture is from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Student Center Living Room, Room SSTU 2105. Women’s History month began this week with a reception launching an art show celebrating the 32nd anniversary of Women in New Roles in the Carillon Gallery of the Joe B. Rushing Center for the Performing Arts. Exhibit hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through March 4. New TCC Leaders Named

A vice chancellor for student success position has been established at TCC, and Joy Gates Black, an administrator with a long record of innovation in student services, has been named to that post. Mark McClendon, who has overseen the financing of energy and technology projects throughout the world, with a special emphasis on Latin America, also joins the leadership team as vice chancellor for finance.  Two veteran TCC administrators also have new roles. Tuskegee Airmen Encourage South Campus Students

Tuskegee Airmen Claude R. Platte and Robert T. McDaniel recently shared a resounding message with an audience primarily of South Campus students: “Take advantage of your opportunities so you will be prepared when your Tuskegee opportunity comes.” Platte, 91, and McDaniel, 86, told the crowd of more than 200 how the delays in receiving legitimate combat missions, coupled with the competitiveness among the African-American pilots to out maneuver one another equipped them to succeed once given the opportunity to fight for their country. The first African-Americans trained as pilots in WWII defied detractors who wanted the experimental operation to fail to perpetuate the myth that blacks were inferior to whites. TCC Hosts H1N1 Mass Clinics

Tarrant County College will host mass clinics for H1N1 vaccinations at four campuses beginning next week. Vaccinations are free and will be administered by the Tarrant County Health Department at Trinity River, South, Southeast and Northeast campuses. The clinics are open to the public and are no longer limited to target populations. “Although the news media are no longer reporting stories of the H1N1 influenza,  pandemic cases of H1N1 are still occurring,” said Woody Kageler, TCC Northeast Campus Health Sciences Director. “Vaccination with the H1N1 vaccine remains the best protection against this infection.” Trinity River Campus will hold the first TCC clinic in 2010 Friday, Feb. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the dining area of the Riverfront Café.  On the … Read entire article »

FastTrac Programs Begin Soon

New business owners and existing ones who want to expand their ventures still can take advantage of the expertise provided by the FastTrac Program administered by TCC’s Small Business Development Corporation. The FastTrac Growth Venture Program which meets on Thursdays, beginning Feb. 18, helps established businesses enhance their operations and profitability. The FastTrac New Venture Program begins Feb. 23, continuing on Tuesdays, and helps new and aspiring business owners evaluate their ideas and plan for future growth. In addition to the time spent in class, participants also have access to the SBDC’s individualized small business counseling. Both programs meet at the James E. Empty Bowls Includes South Campus Outreach Program

Among the 2,000 bowls expected for patrons to choose from at the Feb. 19 Tarrant Area Food Bank’s annual “Empty Bowls-An Artful Luncheon to Fight Hunger “will be about 200 bowls made by students under the supervision of Tarrant County College South Campus Art Instructor Earline Green. Green worked with Fort Worth students at Forest Oak Middle School, Morningside and Oaklawn elementary schools and the Center for New Life. In Dallas, she has also worked with Frazier, McShan, Moreno and Tolbert elementary schools, the Creative Arts Center of Dallas and Klebert/Rylie Recreation Center. TR Gallery Welcomes All to Opening Art Reception

Trinity River Campus’ David Blair welcomes everyone to get a first look at the East Fork Gallery’s newest art exhibition when it opens this Saturday, Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. An opening reception will introduce the “Organic Metal” indoor/outdoor exhibition and will feature a talk by artist Richard Baggett and include a complimentary light brunch. Baggett, a Fort Worth native, has exhibited his metal work both nationally and abroad. Pieces by the blacksmith and sculptor range from large organic shapes composed of two-ton granite pedestals to mythical plant-like structures crafted through what he calls “thousands of tiny touches” to the metal. Administrators Welcome 2010 Leadership TCC Class

Faculty and staff members of this year’s Leadership TCC class convened with the Chancellor’s Executive Leadership Team Feb. 3 at Trinity River Campus in the first of a five-session “behind-the-scenes” tour of Tarrant County College. Interim Chancellor Erma Johnson Hadley welcomed the new participants and emphasized the value of the Leadership TCC program, each individual’s role in the College and TCC’s role in the community. Participants were also fortunate to hear from all five campus presidents, in a question-and-answer panel that explored each of their individual career paths, and unique aspects of each campus. They also discussed future opportunities and challenges for the District and compared TCC to other community colleges. TCC Hires First Weekend College Director

Leticia Gallegos has been named director of the new Weekend College at the Trinity River Campus, becoming the District’s first administrator of Weekend College. Plans call for all TCC campuses to eventually have directors for Weekend College, which allows students to earn an associate degree by taking classes entirely on the weekend. Gallegos earned an M.A. in professional development from Amberton University and a M.S. in student affairs management from the University of North Texas, where she also received a B.A. in speech communications.
