What is Streaming Videos?
Streaming video technology allows you to access high quality video content via the Internet. Instead of downloading an entire video file before viewing it, streaming allows you to begin viewing the video immediately while the rest of the program downloads in the background. Using a computer with a high-speed Internet connection, you can stream videos from any location. There’s no need to track down borrowed or misplaced VHS tapes or DVDs.

To better support the instructional, informational needs of its students and faculty, the Tarrant County College Library has streaming video collection covering a broad range of subjects and genres. The collection can be searched by title, by keywords in segments, browsing titles alphabetically, and browsing or searching within the subject areas. Many of the titles in the collection have closed-captioning. All titles in this collection have a distinct Playlist URL for linking in syllabi, course management shells (Campus Cruiser, Blackboard) or other web pages.

Films On Demand is a multidisciplinary streaming video library of nearly 6000 titles available anytime. This interface provides access to enhanced functionality that allows you to take complete control of your video content and your students’ viewing experience. You can use Films On Demand to search for specific video segments, organize videos into folders, and create personal playlists for others to view. You can also integrate videos directly into online card catalog systems and distance learning courseware.

American History in Video provides the largest and richest collection of video available online for the study of American history. The collaboration between Alexander Street Press and A&E Television Networks, this collection has videos with searchable transcripts synchronized to video, chronicling American history from the 1890s to the 1980s. All of these rich resources are accessible through a search box on the main page. Users can limit searches via a drop-down menu to fields like Title and Series, People, Transcript Text, and Summary. Advanced Search allows users to also specify type of video (archival, documentary, newsreel, public affairs), Person Discussed, Historical Event, Historical Era, Year Discussed, and Place Discussed, among other options. Many of these filters are available in Browse mode, too. Handily, the search feature will take users directly to the portion of the transcript or film where their search result appears, if it is only a portion of the whole.

Ambrose Video 2.0 has a collection of more than 1200 video clips and full programs. It is an extensive library of award-winning materials in social studies, literature, fine arts, and the sciences.

Information presented in class often contains the central concepts of the course and the material most likely to be included on exams. Yet, students frequently do not realize the importance of notetaking and listening.Not only can a student “survive” college with these skills, they can actually do quite well.
